a. The Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Office of
the Geographer and Global Issues (INR/GGI) keeps the Department up-to-date on
new places and boundaries in the world. This office also answers questions regarding
sovereignty issues.
b. The Department uses the short form name of countries
in colloquial or informal context (i.e., internal reports, maps) while the long
form names must be used in formal or official diplomatic context. A list of
the country names, as well as the two-letter country codes (FIPS codes), is
available on the Independent States in the World page of the Department
Internet Web site.

a. The Independent States in the World list on the
Departments Internet Web site is the official list for short-form and
long-form country names and country capitals. The Office of the Geographer and
Global Issues in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR/AN/GGI) maintains
and updates this official list.

special sovereignty, refer to the Dependencies and Areas of Special Sovereignty
page on the Departments Internet Web site.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) World Factbook is
the Federal Government standard for the noun and adjective identifying terms
for citizens of each country. A list of countries and nationalities is
