On behalf of President Obama, I congratulate the people of the Republic of Maldives on the 48th anniversary of your independence on July 26.

The United States stands with the people of the Maldives as they advance their commitment to democracy and the rule of law. We support you as you prepare for this September's presidential elections, including your efforts to safeguard the democratic process by ensuring free, fair, and inclusive polls. Together, we will continue our work on issues of mutual interest, from fostering economic development to combating climate change.
