On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States of America, I offer my best wishes to the people of Kiribati as you celebrate the 34th anniversary of your nation’s independence on July 12.

As we mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Tarawa later this year, we not only look back on the challenges we have faced together, but to the continued strong relationship the United States and Kiribati enjoy as we face the future. Our partnership is built on a firm foundation of shared values and common interests in confronting regional and global challenges, from promoting peace, security and human rights to addressing the truly life and death issue of climate change. The low-lying nation of Kiribati is particularly susceptible to the king tides that threaten life on its shores, and the United States is committed to meeting this challenge in partnership with the people and Government of Kiribati.

As you celebrate your independence day, the United States looks forward to continued cooperation and remains a steadfast partner and friend to Kiribati.
