On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Tonga on taking another step toward democracy with the election of Noble Lord Tu'ivakano as Prime Minister. This selection marks the culmination of Tonga’s first democratic parliamentary elections, and demonstrates the ongoing commitment of King George Tupou V and the people of Tonga to promoting democratic reforms. We look forward to working with the Prime Minister and people of Tonga as we continue to deepen the friendship between our countries.
