On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I would like to congratulate the people of the Republic of Nauru as you celebrate the 48th anniversary of your nation’s independence on January 31.

The United States and Nauru enjoy a warm friendship, strengthened by our cooperation in advancing our shared values and interests. We are working together to protect the environment and oceans, promote sustainable economic development, combat the effects of climate change, and strengthen maritime domain awareness in the Pacific region. The United States looks forward to further deepening its partnership with Nauru.

We wish all of the people of Nauru a joyous celebration and peace and prosperity over the coming year.
