Remarks with Surakiart Sathirathai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand Following Their Meeting

Secretary Colin L. Powell

Washington, DC
April 19, 2001

SECRETARY POWELL: It is a great pleasure to welcome my colleague from Thailand. We had an excellent exchange of views. Relations between our two countries are on a very strong footing now, and I look forward to seeing him again soon at our summit meeting in Hanoi in a couple of months time. So it is a great pleasure to welcome you and to have you here.

MR. SURAKIART: Thank you very much, Mr. Secretary. It is indeed a pleasure for me to have a meeting with Secretary Powell this morning. The relationship between the United States and Thailand has been very close and cordial, and we are now exploring many new areas that we can have closer cooperation in both political and economic issues.

SECRETARY POWELL: Thank you.

MR. SURAKIART: Thank you.

QUESTION: Mr. Secretary, could you give us a few words on the China meeting?

SECRETARY POWELL: I think I'll have the spokesman deal with that because there are a lot of specific technical issues and I would rather have the spokespersons do it. Thank you.
