  • From October 1 to 6, Secretary Pompeo traveled to Italy, The Holy See, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Greece.
  • The Secretary attended the U.S.-Holy See Symposium on Partnering with Faith-Based Organizations, where he delivered keynote remarks. He had a private audience with His Holiness Pope Francis, and met with Secretary of State Cardinal Parolin and Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Gallagher.
  • In Rome, Italy, the Secretary met with President Mattarella, Prime Minister Conte, and Foreign Minister Di Maio. He also visited Abruzzo to tour his ancestral home.
  • The Secretary traveled to Montenegro, where he met with President Djukanovic, Prime Minister Markovic, and Foreign Minister Darmanovic.
  • Next, the Secretary traveled to North Macedonia, where he met with President Pendarovski, Prime Minister Zaev, and other government officials. The Secretary also toured the Holy Mother of God “Peribleptos” monastery complex while visiting Lake Ohrid.
  • Finally, the Secretary traveled to Athens, Greece, where he met with Prime Minister Mitsotakis, Foreign Minister Dendias, and Defense Minister Panagiotopoulos.
