The United States is marking Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th by taking actions to promote accountability for human rights abuses and violations. Together, the Departments of State and the Treasury today have imposed visa restrictions and sanctions on 37 individuals in 13 countries.

After Uganda’s flawed 2021 presidential elections, I announced a visa restriction policy targeting those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Uganda. At that time, I implored the Government of Uganda to significantly improve its record and hold accountable those responsible for flawed electoral processes, violence, and intimidation.

On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Uganda on the 61st anniversary of Uganda’s independence. Over the last 61 years, the American and Ugandan people have partnered to advance health, regional security, economic investment, agriculture, and education. The United States continues to support Ugandans in the pursuit of democracy, respect for human rights, peace, and prosperity for all.
