Remarks After Meeting With Association of Southeast Asian Nations Foreign Ministers

Secretary Condoleezza Rice
Waldorf-Astoria
New York, New York
September 27, 2007

(3:30 p.m. EDT)

QUESTION: Madame Secretary, do you have any comment on the latest events in Burma? It appears that the government has put out an even greater show of force against protestors to get off the streets or they'll be shot.

SECRETARY RICE: We have had a very good discussion here and I - this is a meeting about ASEAN, but I've also had an opportunity to address the representatives of Burma directly. But I don't want to take what is a very good meeting with ASEAN - it has been focused on a common agenda. I would refer to what I consider to be a very good statement by this organization. And I can just assure you that the United States is determined to keep an international focus on the travesty that is taking place in Rangoon.

Thank you.
