Remarks After High-Level Meeting on Iraq

Secretary Condoleezza Rice
UN Headquarters Delegates Entrance
New York City
September 22, 2007

SECRETARY RICE: Excellent meeting. A real commitment from the international community, from Iraq’s neighbors, I think an understanding that the Iraqi people have made a choice for a democratic life, they’ve made a choice against terrorism, and now it’s the international community’s responsibility to help them in their efforts at reconciliation and their efforts to live in peace and unity.

QUESTION: (Inaudible) greater role from the United Nations?

SECRETARY RICE: Yes, absolutely. There was a long discussion of the new Resolution 1770, of the new mandate for UNAMI, of the role that Mr. de Mistura will play, but also great praise for the role that Ambassador Qazi and Ambassador Gambari have been playing and a very good commitment to use the expanded mandate to increase political and reconstruction support for Iraq. It was very good.

QUESTION: How (inaudible) UN personnel?

SECRETARY RICE: Well, I think that the security situation in Iraq is difficult but improving and certainly, the security of UN personnel will be a very high priority for all of the forces there, the Multinational Forces.

QUESTION: Secretary --

SECRETARY RICE: Thank you. Thank you.
