U.S. and Republic of Korea Joint Statement

Secretary Colin L. Powell
Washington, DC
February 7, 2001

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Republic of Korea Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Lee Joung-binn today reaffirmed the fundamental importance of the political, economic and security partnership shared by the United States and South Korea, which has worked to promote democracy and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula for over five decades.

The two ministers agreed that the U.S.-ROK security alliance remains vital to continued peace and stability on the Peninsula. They also agreed that reconciliation and cooperation between North and South Korea are essential to resolving the long-standing division of the Peninsula. Secretary Powell welcomed the very positive recent advances in North-South dialogue since the inter-Korean summit and expressed his support for the South Korean government's policy of reconciliation and cooperation with the North.

Secretary Powell and Minister Lee also concurred on the importance of maintaining our two nations' comprehensive partnership and close coordination on policy toward North Korea. In this regard, they agreed to continue regular consultations at senior levels.

They agreed that the two governments would work to achieve a meeting between President Bush and President Kim at the earliest time.
