It is with the deepest sadness that we learned of the passing of the distinguished former Congressman Wayne Owens yesterday in Tel Aviv, Israel. Wayne Owens served the American people faithfully during four terms in the House of Representatives from the State of Utah, and helped found the Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation here in Washington, D.C. Known to many here in the Department of State and our missions around the world for his tireless pursuit of a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, Congressman Owens leaves behind a legacy of compassion, excellence, and service to the United States of America. Our Embassy in Tel Aviv has been in touch with Congressman Owens' family to convey our deepest condolences and offer our assistance at this difficult time. On behalf of myself and all those at the Department who had the pleasure to work with Mr. Owens, I want to extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Marlene, his five children, his grandchildren, and to all his family and friends.
