KYIV (Bloomberg ) - Ukraine's allies will support it "for as long as it takes" despite Russia's recent steps to escalate its war there, the Group of Seven major industrialized nations plan to say in a statement later Tuesday.
"We reassured President Zelenskiy that we are undeterred and steadfast in our commitment to providing the support Ukraine needs to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity," the group said in a draft statement obtained by Bloomberg, referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. "We will continue to provide financial, humanitarian, military, diplomatic and legal support and stand firmly with Ukraine for as long as it takes."
G-7 leaders are meeting by videoconference one day after Russia launched an intense series of missile strikes in Kyiv and a dozen other cities that struck key infrastructure targets, as well as civilian sites.
The nations, which include the US, UK and Germany, didn't offer any specific new steps it would take or weapons it would provide, but it warned Moscow that any attacks on Western infrastructure would be met by "a united and determined response," referring to the recent "sabotage" of the Nord Stream gas pipelines.
