Minister of Foreign Affairs

(SBU) Bios should be concise and targeted to the principal; state facts, positions held, educational credentials, languages spoken, etc.  Customize bios for the principal.  Do not simply copy/paste from other sources.  Use your best judgment to eliminate information the principal does not need (e.g., exact dates of the subject's assignments for the past 20 years, editorial comments, single-use acronyms, etc.).  Do include relevant background or updates that may not be publicly available, for instance if the subject has met regularly with Department officials on particular issues.  Include concise personal information (hometown, spouse, education etc.) that may be of interest to the principal in the last paragraph.

(U) Classification markings should be included on all paragraphs, titles, and headers/footers.  If the bio is wholly unclassified, no portion markings are required.

(SBU) Include bios with all briefing checklists, call sheets, U.S. Ambassador checklists, and scenarios.  Use Times New Roman 14-pt font and 1-inch margins throughout the body of the document and Times New Roman 10-pt for headers and footers..

(U) For style, use a narrative format, not a CV-style list of dates.  Once you use the subject's title the first time (e.g., "FM Jones"), refer to the subject thereafter only by last name (e.g., "Jones") and not by title.  For educational degrees, be consistent in either using abbreviations (e.g., BA, MA, JD, PhD) or spelling degrees out in down-capitalized style (e.g., "bachelor's degree in international relations and Russian history" or "master's degree in applied mathematics").
