On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I extend our best wishes to the people of Guatemala as you celebrate the 195th anniversary of your nation’s independence on September 15.

In the last year, Guatemala accomplished a peaceful transfer of power under extraordinary circumstances. As a result, Guatemalans are a potent example to the rest of the region of the power of active citizens in a democracy.

The United States remains committed to working together with you and with your government to strengthen mutual security, promote shared prosperity, and uphold the principles of transparent governance accountable to the rule of law.

On this special day, I offer my warmest congratulations and hope that the coming year will be one of success and happiness for all the people of Guatemala.
