Washington, DC

SECRETARY POWELL: I am very pleased to have received the Prime Minister today. We have had a good discussion of the mutual interests that exist between the United States and Bulgaria. The Minister commented on the fact that we have 100 years of diplomatic relations, and they have never been as good as this.

We talked about stability in the Balkans and how we can work together, the territorial integrity of Macedonia, concerns about other parts of the Balkans, and we noted the very strategic position that Bulgaria occupies with respect to the region, and especially with respect to energy issues in the region.

So it is my pleasure to welcome him, and I am sure he will want to say a word.

PRIME MINISTER KOSTOV: (In Bulgarian.)

SECRETARY POWELL: Thank you very much.
