6 FAM 1531 OFFICIAL INTERPRETING ARRANGEMENTS

a. Arrangements for any Department or Foreign Service personnel, or employees of other U.S. Government agencies, to serve as official interpreters for visits or high-level meetings will be made by the Office of Language Services (A/OPR/LS). The Office of Language Services consults with other pertinent areas of the Department involved in the event such as the Office of the Chief of Protocol (S/CPR), the Executive Secretariat (S/ES), or geographic bureaus.

b. The Office of Language Services may assign interpreters from its own staff or roster of private contractors or arrange for the detail of qualified Foreign Service or Department officers, or officers from other agencies. A/OPR/LS ascertains that assigned officers or contractors possess the necessary qualifications and interpreting aptitude.

Department officers who are responsible for arrangements for meetings of the Secretary or the Secretarys designated representatives with ranking foreign officials shall inform the Chief of the Interpreting Division (A/OPR/LS/I) of anticipated interpreting needs as soon as possible. Timely notification to the Office of Language Services is required to assure that adequate language support staff personnel are available. Nonprofessional/contract interpreters may be assigned if the interpreting requirement is not known early enough or if it is a language not spoken by staff personnel.

6 FAM 1533 INTERPRETER ASSIGNMENTS BY POSTS ABROAD

All U.S. missions, embassies and consulates shall consult with the Interpreting Division, Office of Language Services (A/OPR/LS/I), before making any interpreter assignments for high-ranking U.S. visitors, formal negotiations, or major official events.
